Article I. Name
This church is duly incorporated as a religious organization under the laws of the State of Illinois, under the corporate Name: The First Baptist Church of Elgin, Illinois.
Article II. Purpose
The purpose of this church is to preach and teach the Word of God and to promote the Gospel and doctrines of Christ taught in the Holy Scriptures, which this church accepts as an all-sufficient basis of doctrine and practice. We will observe the ordinances of baptism and communion, train members in the principles of Christian living and discipleship, render Christian community service, and support missionary and Christian educational work in this and other countries.
Article III. Affiliation
This church is a corporate entity possessing all rights of sovereignty and self-rule, owing allegiance to none except Jesus Christ. In order that its purposes can be more effectively accomplished, this church does voluntarily associate itself with the American Baptist Churches of the U.S.A.
Article IV. Membership
The membership of this church shall consist of persons who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, accepted our Statement of Faith and Church Covenant, and fulfilled the requirements set forth in the Bylaws.
Article V. Pastorate
The Senior Pastor shall be a person who has accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, is a duly ordained evangelical minister who fully embraces our Statement of Faith and Church Covenant and is committed to fulfilling the requirements of our Bylaws.
Officers, ministry team members, and staff members shall be selected and serve in accordance with the provisions and requirements set forth in the Bylaws.
Article VII. Authority
All authority and responsibility shall be vested in the body of the church. Certain authority and responsibility are delegated to the Senior Pastor, the corporate officers, and the Diaconate as specified in the Bylaws.
Article VIII. Meetings
Meetings for worship, prayer, other ministries of the church, and the transaction of business, shall be held as provided for in the Bylaws.
Written Bylaws will not conflict with this Constitution and shall govern the functioning bodies of this church and may be adopted or amended at any regular or special business meeting of the church by a two-thirds (2/3) affirmative vote of the active members present and qualified to vote. Notice of such amendment stating the nature of the proposed change shall be announced at all worship services for two (2) consecutive weeks preceding the actual day of the vote.
Article X. Amendments
The Constitution, our Statement of Faith, and our Church Covenant may be amended at any regular or special business meeting of the church by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of a special quorum comprised of no fewer than twenty-five percent (25%) of current active members qualified to vote.
